Now his own personal pictures have been collected and published with illuminating text by Johnny Martin, Browne's great nephew, who has a collection of his pictures and photographic paraphernaila. Matthew Kellet has been involved in the book and its design, and Johnny, who lives locally and is in Ireland promoting the book this week, has expressed interest in coming to the Groucho soon. Such a way to go about these things was news to some of us, though <span style="font-weight: bold;">Simon Spanswick</span> undoubtedly knows all about it. It is part of what has been called "the Copernican change" - that is, intellectual property is now the sun, not the book. "The book is merely one orbiting opportunity," declared Shatzkin at a session entitled <a target="_blank" href="http://www.startwithxml.com/">Start with XML</a>. The usual suspects were joined by <span style="font-weight: bold;">Viv Watts</span>, long-time sub on the Express, who brought the news that 86 subs are to be sacked by Dirty Des, who can't imagine what they actually do: his plan is for all journalists to tap their stories into a template, to fit, and the remaining handful of subs will simply stick a headline and standfirst on top. About 30 turned up, all much better dressed than the Groucho slouches. This was mostly a new media crowd and not the place to say: “I can do you a thousand words for two hundred quid.” Brighton is the centre of New Media in Britain these days, and the BBC are sending scouts there to recruit. One of its driving forces is a website, <a href="http://www.wiredsussex.com/">Wired Sussex</a>. The photography class is scheduled from 9–10.30am on Wednesday mornings and needs a tutor with some appreciation of how pictures and words might work together. Technically speaking the demands aren't massive, using digital cameras and general editing packages to produce images good enough to drop into books. However, we do need someone capable of explaining how equipment works and helping students to research information on elements like focal length and pieces of photographic equipment; even though the students may never venture beyond basic digital images in their own work. Rates circa £28-00 per hour. Coming hard after a Bank Holiday weekend, it was unsurprising. <span style="font-weight: bold;">Paul Harvey</span>, Business Development Manager of <a href="http://kmfm.co.uk/">Kent FM</a> ("The music you want – the news you need") came and went before anyone else arrived. <span style="font-weight: bold;">Stephen Fleming</span> was offering work for his <a href="http://www.editorialintelligence.com/">Editorial Intelligence</a> gathering, for which I may be grateful. <span style="font-weight: bold;">Matthew Kellett </span>was in the pub anyway, prior to a few days in France. <span style="font-weight: bold;">Nick Gilbert</span> and <span style="font-weight: bold;">David Merewether</span> turned up later, by which time conversation turned to the ownership of local pubs. <span style="font-weight: bold;">Jezz Tims</span> nearly made it, and sent the following invitation for the next Meejahub meeting in Thorins Wine Bar, Tunbridge Wells:<span style="font-style: italic;"><br /></span><pre><span style="font-size:100%;"><tt><tt>The </tt></tt><tt><tt>G</tt></tt><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-olL7JtpX0y4MY-He7vroACMnfBbkCZ4kPGQOcVEfQIr9Jh7LbogzxERkNCNwz_jut8DprWI5UwrFY34F1zBk_oXVhCtJFh2Mxw6sJjbHqQNm7X8iVunGtxkG-N0flfpxwlW5kMb-wI0/s1600-h/mhbutton.small.gif"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 90px; height: 79px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-olL7JtpX0y4MY-He7vroACMnfBbkCZ4kPGQOcVEfQIr9Jh7LbogzxERkNCNwz_jut8DprWI5UwrFY34F1zBk_oXVhCtJFh2Mxw6sJjbHqQNm7X8iVunGtxkG-N0flfpxwlW5kMb-wI0/s200/mhbutton.small.gif" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5240121232705796946" border="0" /></a><tt><tt>roucho lot are all invited to the next Meeja</tt></tt><tt><tt>Hub<br />meeting on the 10th Sept - I know</tt></tt><tt><tt> it cl</tt></tt><tt><tt>ashes<br />but you could all come over if you wish.<br />It is free for now - we are still testing<br />the water on how membership should be paid<br />and how much etc.<br />We may scrap the membership fee or reduce it<br />to a minimal amount if we get the right sponsors.<br />So it is a free event for potential members to see if it is<br />right for them etc. However, if they could sign up on the<br />meejahub site and register their attendance to the event so<br />we can manage numbers that would be great. But it does seem that all freelance journalists and photographers have to register - that's what they told me on the phone today. <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Information_Commissioner%27s_Office_%28UK%29">Wikipedia</a> tells you what this outfit is and we should check it out.<br />• I didn't have a chance to pursue the 'Sitting Next to Nelly' idea. I'll try next time, on Tuesday, August 26.<br /><br /><span style="font-style: italic;"></span>Bristol Book Publishinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06737723692365861620noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4381669918462303364.post-63317514247557421762008-07-24T11:31:00.000-07:002008-08-11T13:51:22.680-07:00Thursday, July 31<span style="font-weight: bold;">Gaynor Edwards</span>, <span style="font-weight: bold;">Stephen Fleming</span> and <span style="font-weight: bold;">Jez Timms</span>, founders of <a href="http://www.meejahub.co.uk/">Meejahub</a>, the media and creative network organisation recently inaugurated in Tunbridge Wells, came to find us. So we had some feedback on how they were doing - early days yet. They are listed under Groucho People (below right), so click on them to find out about Gaynor's Torpedo Juice ethical PR agency, Jez's website designs and Stephen's copywriting and media activities. Jez knows about these things. Another new face was the photographer <span style="font-weight: bold;">Matthew Kellett</span>, who lives within spiting distance of the pub, and who has just returned from Australia to find work not so easy to pick up here. In the course of the evening, there was a spectacular car crash outside the pub (nobody hurt). Of course neither Matthew not <span style="font-weight: bold;">David Merewether</span> had their cameras with them. <span style="font-weight: bold;">Nick Gilbert</span> and <span style="font-weight: bold;">Dick Stevenson </span>were there, too.<br /><span style="font-style: italic;">Next Groucho: Monday, August 11</span>Bristol Book Publishinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06737723692365861620noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4381669918462303364.post-23311904643142839532008-07-17T04:12:00.000-07:002008-12-13T10:51:02.777-08:00Wednesday, July 16<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjL-YA89pxpOhOq7So1PtSQ_uhNZvK4FYf7KJ7XEYp_whJRffxpMC3BqCnt7p-N1aHNO86P5NYoUb0hatIJVgpgqUmMBXC7NUK33DIG4E8TNBfqv-qjKfu9JnMLCr9VH7IjqHyWAeA4er0/s1600-h/box.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjL-YA89pxpOhOq7So1PtSQ_uhNZvK4FYf7KJ7XEYp_whJRffxpMC3BqCnt7p-N1aHNO86P5NYoUb0hatIJVgpgqUmMBXC7NUK33DIG4E8TNBfqv-qjKfu9JnMLCr9VH7IjqHyWAeA4er0/s200/box.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5227258327121679954" border="0" /></a>A convivial meeting - inside because it was too cold out. <span style="font-weight: bold;">Clive</span> and <span style="font-weight: bold;">Kate Crook</span> brought the dog, and the first round. <span>Kate has just had her first exhibition in Europe, in Munich.</span><span style="font-weight: bold;"> Rohan Barnett</span> fixed my computer, explained about the 'rebranding' of the Royal Oak in Hawkhurst, to open soon, and fell into discussion with <span style="font-weight: bold;">Sylvia Howe</span> who wanted a new website. <span style="font-weight: bold;">Penny Tweedie </span>was getting reading for a 10-day assignment in Nigeria – she is taking a suitcase full of film to give away, as she is now entirely digital. <span style="font-weight: bold;">Dick Stevenson</span> was in good form. <span style="font-weight: bold;">Zoë Meyer</span> brought along the series of books on trees she has published – <span style="font-style: italic;">above</span>, 17 of them so far – and <span style="font-weight: bold;">Andy Ma</span><span style="font-weight: bold;">rshall</span>, author of <span style="font-style: italic;">Stopping's Easy</span>, a book on quitting smoking that he is promoting with visits to schools.<br />Conversati<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPyi2XDKrO82SsWmfIbAGfOqVNf_kFkvYvXeoumajai0Lv1szv57WEEXjDMMiT3SvEeP_QL2jq3h42yXCIkYZkjNE6rRDF7IAUWgP1-72mBrkRvmxJMX8GNEqkNCM_Eun5duriIwkUsS8/s1600-h/m2ovie.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 103px; height: 136px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPyi2XDKrO82SsWmfIbAGfOqVNf_kFkvYvXeoumajai0Lv1szv57WEEXjDMMiT3SvEeP_QL2jq3h42yXCIkYZkjNE6rRDF7IAUWgP1-72mBrkRvmxJMX8GNEqkNCM_Eun5duriIwkUsS8/s200/m2ovie.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5226421163802948242" border="0" /></a>on drifted towards the <span style="font-weight: bold;">Kino</span>, and how <span style="font-weight: bold;">Paul Corcoran</span> and <span style="font-weight: bold;">Helen Jones </span>were bumped out of there by the money men.
